This music is about zen, the guys from Tosca say, but you don't have
to bend your mind ritually, to delve into this, knee deep.
The question ain't: are you experienced, but: are you ready?
Here is music that doesn't attack you with the usual 24 hour-online-
information-staccato. Like a quiet storm it seductively rotates around
a firm center: beats, as sublime as muscular. sparkling bathtub
sounds, distant bells, flickering percussion, splinters of blues,
brazilistics licks, a dadaistically chopped up voice drops in, drops
out, analogue and digital inputs blurred. welcome to the world of
being not so sure. Of course this is not your usual trip hop inventory.
At tosca`s, other than with the odd fx-addicted beat whitewashers,
there is a deep understanding for the afro-american foundation of
this music. Skills gained through respect, that makes their tracks roll
like no other, drop dead gorgeously. Slow funk food. mind music for
the stressed out urbanist. as the albums title suzuki states, this is
not about cheap esoteric escapes, it is a head on confrontation with
daily routines, an industrialization of ambient concepts. Space here
means the redefinition of your very own biotope.
Its not by chance, that american superstar artist gabriel orozco tosca recently hooked
up with tosca. Orozco, takes his cues from ordinary, often urban,
settings and prosaic materials, e.g. a rubber inner tube, a lumpen
ball of plasticine, a tin of cat food or the cap of a yoghurt container
- each, in orozco's hands, are subtly and poetically transformed.
Same with tosca: with these barest of means, lyrical sculptures are
created, which redeem the discarded, the obsolete and the
ephemeral.
Zen? Lets call it sexy reductionism. We are on a gentle
glide downwards, or are we moving up? Where`s the light? No need
to worry, you won't need no safety belt. This is tosca, you`re safe. |

Eines gleich vorweg: Die Erwartungen, die an das neue Album
dieser beiden Wiener Schulfreunde geknüpft waren, können
Rupert Huber und Richard Dorfmeister locker übertreffen. Nach dem
Debüt-Album OPERA und den diversen Remixen ist die neue Tosca
ihr Meisterstück geworden: Ein Schmelztiegel für digitale wie
analoge Inputs, aus dem ein paar große Grooves in die Welt
aufsteigen. Die Tracks scheinen fast ineinander überzugehen (sie
tun es nicht!), einzelne Partikelchen von einem Stück ins nächste
zu wandern (Background-Vocals, ein Bas-Motiv). Bei einem Track
wie "Honey" wartet man nur auf den Remix, der dem Stück den
kleinen, entscheidenden Kick auf den Dancefloor gibt."Boss On
The Boat" ist ein luftig im Wind flatterndes Stück Jazz,
"Busenfreund" besitzt Erik-Satie-reife Piano-Parts. In "Annanas" sind
nicht ganz vordergründig aber doch vernehmbar ein paar rhythmisch
geflüsterte 'tschikedas-tschikedas' zu hören, die auf Afro-Beat-Wurzeln
und Don Cherry verweisen. Wer sich auf Huber und Dorfmeisters
raffiniert kreisende Electro-Suiten einlässt, wird mit verschiedenen
Fensterchen in ferne Winkel der Popkultur bedient. Funk Food für
die mental Freien! Und "Suzuki", das hatten wir noch vergessen zu
erwähnen, ist nicht etwa der Hinweis auf die favorisierte
Motorradmarke der beiden Akteure, sondern dem gleichnamigen
Zen-Meditations-Meister gewidmet.
