And not the slightest breeze shall distort the sound. Ladies and gentlemen: Peter Kruder and his Peace Orchestra. This is a musical lyricist at work. One who shapes atmospheres from sounds, gift-wraps them in grooves and deftly screws them into the auditory canal. One who renders his impressions, views and thoughts into music, defining his perception of the world and showcasing the language he has developed to accomplish it.
The mere conception of performing this complex task using the orchestral format bears testimony to his courage. For when speaking of an orchestra, you think of the great magnitude involved, of stages full of instruments, of talented musicians - the conductor at the front, behind him the expectant audience. Above all you think of the sound of the music: large, polished, recorded live. A real and practically uncontrollable colossus. Only the true Grandmasters among conductors succeed in mustering the sound of an orchestra, holding the music together and conferring it with an entirely individual dynamic. When this happens the dividing lines blur and the orchestra becomes one with its master; and the listeners, too.
The recording we are presented with (the Peace Orchestra´s first solo album under the leadership of Peter Kruder, from Vienna), exemplifies the magic that such an "at-one-ment" achieves. Even after the first few bars, you find yourself already enthralled by the dark depth of the sound. The music sparkles sinister and sexy, as dub echoes drop like pearls around the arrangements and the jazzy bass rasps sensually. And then: an awakening, a tempo, a clarinet. Furthermore: passion. There follows a brief breathlessness, then relaxation once again. Time to inhale. Grooves once more. The rhythm of the track varies lithely between jazz, dub and bossa and repeatedly there emerges a musical soul of such overwhelming brilliance and beauty that, despite its solemnity, emerges like a gloriously radiant sun in the early evening sky. Then, finally, the long feedback of a blaring echo resounds and you have reached the end of a magnificent album. Exhale. Silence. If you succeed in carefully extracting yourself from the long-lasting spell this music casts, perhaps questions ensue. For you heard almost all the parameters that constitute the sound of a conventional orchestra being satisfied. The epic format, the vivid depth, the live atmosphere.
